Mayweather Jr. hits Ortiz with a sucker punch on the face giving boxing fans a controversial knock-out win. Last Sept. 17 2011, at the boxing event intitled “Star Power” held at the MGM Grand Arena, former pound-per-pound boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. faced WBC World Welterweight title holder, Victor Ortiz. Mayweather snached the belt from Ortiz on a four rounder sucker punch that knocked Victor Ortiz. Ortiz was badly hit and did not able to recover on ten counts.
It was clear for boxing analysts that Mayweather dominated the first three rounds with ease. He controlled the game forcing Ortiz to miss punches. Victor Ortiz showed an aggressive performance in the ring. He tried to bully and work around the jabs and hooks but was always caught with a counter jab from Mayweather causing little swelling on his right eye. Then the bell rang for the fourth round, Ortiz continued on an aggressive pace then suddenly out of the heart to hit Mayweather on the face along the corner of the ring, he headbutt Mayweather.
It was clear that Ortiz intentionally used his head but afterward he apologized to Mayweather. The referee was not looking at the two fighters neither he called the two fighters to box again in the center ring. And Ortiz was still attempting to hug Mayweather for apology but Mayweather suddenly surprised Ortiz with a left jab, followed by a right sucker punch on the face of Ortiz knocking him down the canvas. Ortiz ,at the video replay, was looking at the referee for a signal to fight but with the following events he was caught off-guard and found himself being counted for a knock-out.
Boxing fans around the globe were shocked with mix emotions on what they saw last Sept. 17, at the MGM Grand Arena. Issues like Pacquiao, after seeing the fight, will back-off because of the disrespectful attitude and dirty tactics of Mayweather or will he stand and mess up a 42 win, 0 loss record.
Boxing analysts Larry Merchant had an interview with Mayweather in the ring after the fight, but it ended up with Mayweather trash talking Larry Merchant, which was very disrespectful for the 80 year old veteran. True enough, Mayweather is a really great boxer but overwhelmed with his greatness. He felt victorious on that night, but other than that people booed him, again.
